Conference for the Marañón

This August, we invite you to a special gathering in Chachapoyas to celebrate and protect the free-flowing rivers of Latin America, with a focus on the Marañón River. Over the course of two days, we’ll host public events as part of the Students for Rivers Camp.

Celebrating the river

From storytelling to live music, we’ve put together a program that welcomes everyone to connect with the river.

Friday, August 22: We kick off with an open-air environmental film night featuring Karuara – The People of the River, a Peruvian film that explores the cultural and spiritual connections with Amazonian rivers. The screening will be followed by short documentaries and a space for conversation. This event is organized in collaboration with Conservamos por Naturaleza as part of their Kuyapanakuy film series.

Saturday, August 23: During the day, we will host a conference that brings together river defenders, students, local organizations, and National Geographic Explorers. It will be a space for open dialogue and exchange of strategies for protecting free-flowing rivers. Participants of the Students for Rivers Camp will present their project ideas for the Marañón’s protection.

That evening, join us at Killawasi for Killafest — a cultural, artistic, and gastronomic event to reconnect with the Marañón and Uctubamba Rivers. A collective celebration that highlights the ecological, cultural, and spiritual importance of our rivers.
