Free Rivers Fellowship

We invite you to join the Free Rivers Fellowship; a two-month collaboration where you join a small, interdisciplinary team of professionals to contribute to the protection of the Ötztaler Ache and the Platzertal. Together, you will build a clear, evidence-based story explaining why the Kaunertal Hydropower Extension is not in the interest of people in the EU, as a critical voice to the project’s placement on the EU’s list of Projects of Common Interest.

The River Collective brings together river lovers from a wide range of disciplines to protect the rivers that we love. While our SRCs engage people currently studying at university, we now call those who have already gained some years of work experience, and would like to contribute their skills. We have set up a fellowship in collaboration with Protect Tyrol’s Whitewater, who are fighting to protect the Ötztaler Ache. A kick-off weekend in Innsbruck in February, followed by two months of remote collaboration (up to 5 hours per week) to bring a collective story of why stopping the Kaunertal Hydropower Extension project is in the public interest. Do you want to contribute your expertise? Check out www.wet-tirol.at/fellowship.

The Kaunertal Hydropower Extension Project is a controversial project that would destroy a pristine fen wetland and in a next stage, divert upto 80% of the flow of the Ötztaler Ache. The River Collective has helt a Students for Rivers Camp here in 2022, and as a follow up, a group of participants curated this beautiful map of the Ötztal Alps, where many perspectives to, and arguments against the Kaunertal Extension are illustrated.

Support the Fellowship

As this initiative needs to happen now, as a reaction to recent developments in the Kaunertal project, we are still looking for more funding. Any donation to the project would be very much appreciated!
